On June 28, 2026, the Nassaukerk, the beating heart of the Staatsliedenbuurt, celebrates its 100th anniversary. To mark this jubilee, World Opera Lab is looking to the future. Director and local resident Miranda Lakerveld is creating the new community opera 'Sibyls in the City' together with residents: a festive and unifying performance. The opera can be seen on June 25, 26, and 27 in the Nassaukerk.
The performance draws inspiration from fortune telling rituals from around the world, such as the Greek seers, the Sibyls, the Chinese I Ching, religious prophecies, and tarot. These centuries-old traditions are interwoven with personal predictions from local residents, thus offering a glimpse into the future of the neighborhood.
The musical heart of the opera is formed by 'Canto de la Sibila', a medieval Spanish mass. This is intertwined with music and traditions from Mexico, the Middle East, West Africa and Surinam. The performance is done by the World Opera Lab ensemble, with soprano Sabra Bahri Khatri, singer and dancer Vanessa Felter, organist Wim Dijkstra, soprano and violinist Claire Adams, oud player Haytham Safia, and marimba player Wendy Palomeque.
