Va Pensiero is an intimate opera featuring a remarkable protagonist—the Euphrates River, or Al-Furat in Arabic. Along its banks, the first civilizations and the earliest writing emerged, from the very first settlements in present-day Syria to clay tablets with poetry, and the Babylon of Nebuchadnezzar. Where its waters flowed, numerous musical cultures originated. Its banks gave rise to beautiful stories that profoundly influenced Western culture as well.
